Milton teen killed in crash near Whitewater
Police: Speed, road conditions appear to be factors in crash
A 19-year-old Milton woman is dead following a crash on South Highway 59 near Whitewater Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The Rock County Coroner's Office identified the woman as Teagan Kathleen-Jee Nolan. She was a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, according to a release from the campus.
Rock County officials were dispatched to a traffic crash with injuries on South Highway 59 near East Gould Drive around 12:45 p.m., according to a release.
Emergency crews found a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, driven by Nolan, on the road, which had been hit on the passenger side by a 2005 Ford Econoline van, officials said.
Nolan was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. The 56-year-old Whitewater man driving the van was transported by Flight for Life to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville. He is currently in serious condition.
Police said there was also a 63-year-old man in the passenger seat of the van who was transported with minor injuries.
Investigators said the Chevrolet was eastbound on South Highway 59 and was going around the curve at East Gould Drive when Nolan lost control of the vehicle and started sliding into the east ditch.
As Nolan attempted to steer out of the ditch, the vehicle spun counterclockwise and went into the westbound lane of traffic, according to the release. The Econoline van was traveling westbound on South Highway 59, and the van hit the car when it came into the westbound lane.
Nolan was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident, officials said. Speed and road conditions appear to be factors in the crash.
Crews had South Highway 59 closed for about four hours as deputies investigated and cleared the scene.
