Former Milton police chief killed in I-90 crash
Crash on Interstate 39/90 closes northbound lanes
A former Milton police chief was killed in semitrailer crash on Interstate 39/90 near Janesville just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Milton city officials.
Milton Police Chief Daniel Layber said Terry Hawkins, 61, was killed when his vehicle was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. He said Hawkins was caught in traffic on Interstate 90 from another crash that occurred earlier when his vehicle was struck.
Hawkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Layber said Hawkins was police chief from 1990 to 2004 when he retired. Hawkins was chief of police in Brillion before coming to Milton.
"Mr. Hawkins will be missed and his many years of service to our country and law enforcement are greatly appreciated and will not soon be forgotten," Layber said.
The accident happened near mile marker 178 near Avalon Road. The State Patrol said seven vehicles were involved in the crash and two others were injured.
Driver fatigue is being investigated as a possible contributing factor in the crash, according to the State Patrol.
The northbound lanes of I-39/90 were closed between Racine Street and Highway 14 near Janesville, until 1:40 a.m. Friday.
Two other crashes also happened last night on interstates in Rock County. Officials also report an accident at mile marker 171 near Highway 14, while another happened on the northbound ramp to Interstate 43, which was acting as a detour for I-39/90 at the time.
