MADISON, Wis. -

The Department of Natural Resources has extended the deadline to submit comments on the pre-application process for Gogebic Taconite’s potential mining project in Iron and Ashland counties, according to a release.

The public comment period for the bulk sampling activity ends Sept. 3 but the new deadline for submitting comments is Sept. 17, according to the release.

Officials said they extended the deadline to give the public additional time to consider the pre-application notification and pre-application description, which provide a preliminary description of the potential mining project.

Comments can be submitted on all aspects of the notification, including the preliminary project design, project impacts and the scope of environmental baseline data collection, according to the release.

The bulk sampling activity and potential mining site are located in the town of Anderson in Iron County, and in the town of Morse in Ashland County, according to the release.

The DNR has held a public informational hearing in Hurley Aug. 15 to take comments on the bulk sampling plan and pre-application process, officials said. Approximately 250 people attended the hearing and more than 100 people spoke on the project.

Comments can be submitted via mail to Larry Lynch, DNR, 101 S. Webster St., Madison, Wisconsin, 53707, or by email to dnrwamining-gogebictaconite@wisconsin.gov.
