City officials taking next steps on Madison Public Market plans
Next step to have public market expert create business plan
Madison officials announced the next steps in creating a Madison Public Market Tuesday in a release.
The city released a request for proposals to engage an experienced public market expert to help create a business plan for the project, according to the release.
The business plan will evaluate options for the Public Market, including potential locations, vendors, hours of operation, and types of products, according to the release.
Officials said developing the business plan will be a community process that includes input from numerous stakeholders, businesses, and the public.
After spending several months researching different models and discussing options, Mayor Sogling and the Local Food Committee have put forth ideas for a new and expanded vision for the project, according to the release.
The release stated the Public Market will create a retail destination for locally-grown and prepared foods and is expected to be the centerpiece of a thriving food district that blends sales of food products, wholesale operations, aggregation of regional produce, and space for small food-processing businesses.
Developing the business plan is the next step in evaluating these ideas and bringing the Public Market and food district concept to reality, according to the release.
Officials said the city sees the Public Market as an important economic development project that will spur new businesses and jobs.
City officials said they expect the business plan to create a clear and final vision for what the Public Market will be, where it will be located, and what it will offer the community.
According to the release, the plan will be developed over the next several months, and the city will host a variety of opportunities for community members to share their ideas and input once the consulting team is brought on board in early October.
