Car goes 100 mph down John Nolen trying to escape police
Driver gets away after car abandoned
A man who stole a car from an east side gas station Sunday night drove nearly 100 mph down John Nolen Drive in an effort to escape being caught.
The incident started around 11:15 p.m. at a gas station in the 3000 block of East Washington Avenue.
According to police, a man stole a car while it was left running in the lot while the owner went inside the store. After a call to 911, police saw the stolen car as it went toward John Nolen Drive.
Police said when the man saw police following him, he accelerated quickly to nearly 100 mph on the nearly empty highway. The officer had to go at a slower speed to remain safe. However, the driver lost control of his car when trying to turn on to West Lakeside Street. The driver then abandoned the car and fled on foot, according to police.
Police searched for the driver using a K-9, but were unsuccessful. The victim believes the thief was dropped off by another person in a white Cadillac sedan, which was also observed by the officer as being ahead of the fleeing vehicle when the stop was initiated. Police said it's possible this car may have picked up the driver of the stolen car after he fled on foot.
No one was injured as a result of the crash.
