A bill that would prohibit law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin from using drones unless they have a search warrant or legitimate reason is up for a hearing Wednesday.
The bipartisan proposal from Rep. Tyler August would require law enforcement to obtain a warrant before using unmanned aircraft equipped with video or audio recording devices as part of criminal investigations. Evidence will not be allowed if obtained illegally.
Exceptions would apply in certain situations, such as during manhunts or rescue operations.
The proposal would ban drones from being used to invade people's privacy. They could be used in public areas where the expectation of privacy is low. Current law does not provide such guidelines.
