MADISON, Wis. -

The staff of a State Street bar used software to track a man who took a bouncer’s smartphone Saturday night, according to Madison police.

Police said the staff from Paul’s Club gave chase after the bouncer’s phone was taken while it was charging inside the nightclub. An employee used an app to track the stolen phone.

Officers joined the chase and found a man behind a building in the 600 block of North Henry Street.

Denis T. Baker, 33, of Madison, denied stealing the phone and allowed police to search him. He told police he was in hiding because he was being chased by the bar employees.

Police said a bar employee called the phone, which was then found in the snow beneath a trash can next to where the man was hiding.

Baker was arrested on suspicion of theft.
