FITCHBURG, Wis. - The Dane County Medical Examiner?s Office on Monday released the names of the four people killed in an apparent drunken-driving crash in Fitchburg on Saturday.
The victims were identified as Phankham Chitanavong, 17, of Rockford, Ill., Alan Michael Dickson, 25, of Rockford, Jose Antonio Cabrera-Hernandez, 18, of Madison, and Martin Sanchez-Gutierrez, 17, of Madison.
According to a news release issued by the Medical Examiner's Office, all four died from the traumatic injuries they received in the crash.
The single-vehicle crash happened in the 5000 block of Lacy Road shortly after 5 p.m. Police said five people were inside the vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Lacy Road and failed to stop at Syene Road. The vehicle continued eastbound and went airborne while crossing railroad tracks. The driver lost control, struck a utility pole and over turned, police said.
Four of the five occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Three of the occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Victor Benitez, 18, of Madison, was arrested in connection with the crash. Police said he fled and was arrested a few blocks away. He was tentatively charged with four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. Police said that Benitez could face more charges.
Fitchburg police said that they believe alcohol and speed appear to be a factor in the crash. They said appears that no one in the vehicle was wearing their safety belts.
Authorities said that the crash remains under investigation by the Fitchburg police and the Medical Examiner?s Office.
