OAK CREEK, Wis. -

Despite wearing a cast and with a wound to his throat making it hard to speak, Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy gave a very public thank you over the weekend.

Murphy spoke at a fundraiser on Sunday in the bowling alley parking lot across from the Sikh temple that was the site of August’s mass shooting.

The lot is the same one that authorities used as a staging ground when they responded to the shootings.

Wade Michael Page killed six temple members while shooting Lt. Murphy more than a dozen times.

"I just want to let everyone know how appreciative I am," said Lt. Murphy. "My family is for your kindness, prayers, and support that means so much to us."

Standing next to Lt. Murphy was Officer Sam Lenda, who fired the shot that took down the gunman.
