MADISON, Wis. -

A group of friends walking Friday night in downtown Madison was threatened by a woman with a steak knife, according to a news release from Madison police.

The group, which included three 18-year-old women and a 19-year-old man, told police they were walking on Regent Street near Coyne Street when a woman came up to them with her arms open wide. Police said she began hugging some of the women, stepped back and asked, “Can I kill you tonight?” The woman had a steak knife in her hand, according to the victims.

Police said the man in the group took the woman to the ground. The woman dropped the knife and one of the other victims knocked it away and threw it down a storm drain.

The man then let the woman go and she ran off.

University of Wisconsin-Madison police and Madison police took her into custody. Police said she appeared to be having significant mental health issues and was taken to a hospital.
