A Verona woman has filed a formal complaint with the state, saying Tangles Salon and Spa in Madison ripped her off for services she never received.
Brenda Armstrong said she sent an $85 check to Tangles, 642 S. Whitney Way, but when she went for her scheduled haircut and manicure appointment, the business had closed.
A sign on Tangles's front door stated that the company had closed temporarily Feb. 1 for "reorganization."
Calls and emails to the company were not returned Sunday.
"I just want my money back," Armstrong said. "It was like I'd been taken advantage of, ripped off, and that they don't value that they have a repeat customer."
Armstrong filed her complaint Friday with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
Tangles later sent her an email telling her she could get her services or a refund once the reorganization was complete, but didn't give a timeframe.
Tangles, which is marketed as an Aveda salon, may never reopen, said Nicole Beckjorden, a stylist who said she's continuing to cut hair at the location on her own.
Two out of the six or seven stylists are doing that, she said. Beckjorden said another business may open a salon in the building.
She said clients that had bought a Groupon deal for the salon should contact Groupon for a refund.
While she doesn't know if she'll get her money back, Armstrong said she's learned a lesson from the process.
"You don't pay for services in advance of receiving them -- I don't know what I was thinking that day," she said. "I'm kind of an honest person and I don't think people would do something like that, especially if I've had services there before."
Tangles doesn't have a rating with Wisconsin's Better Business Bureau.
