An 87-year-old woman who lives in the Sunset Village neighborhood of Madison nearly fell victim to a phone scam, Madison police said.
Last month she took a phone call from a young man who claimed to be her grandson, and said he had been arrested in Panama City, Panama.
The young man told her to wire him $2,500 so he could get out of jail, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.
The woman called her daughter, who told her this was a phone scam.
When the young man called back, the woman called him out, saying she knew he was a thief trying to take her money, and hung up.
The young man did not call back.
