The Rock County Sheriff's Office said a man suspected of fatally shooting a woman is hospitalized in critical condition.
The Sheriff's Office said the man, in his 70s, is in custody at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Authorities said they believe he's the only other person involved and that there's no danger to the public.
Deputies and SWAT officers responded to 6707 W. Stuart Road in the town of Plymouth at 8:18 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a shooting.
After setting up a perimeter at the farm, authorities discovered the body of a woman in her late 50s shot to death in a shed.
Investigators said they found the suspect seriously injured in another shed on the property, and he was taken by MedFlight to UW Hospital.
"That male had a firearm by his side and apparently was severely injured with a self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Rock County Sheriff Robert Spoden.
Detectives said it appeared there was an altercation. Sheriff's officials said the victim appears to be an acquaintance of the suspect, but they wouldn't say how the two knew each other.
"This is a tragedy. It's a tragedy for a community. It's a tragedy for the family of the victim," Spoden said.
No names have been released.
Spoden said this is the first homicide the Rock County Sheriff's Office has investigated this year.
The sheriff plans to release more information at a Thursday news conference.
