MADISON, Wis. -

About 100 people got "Dirty for Dane" over the weekend as part of a volunteer project to restore area lands and waterways.

The Dane County Environmental Council and several volunteers helped to restore prairie lands, clean water trails and remove invasive species.

"We're hoping that in the longer run people recognize how much important work is being done by volunteers to keep these spaces in Dane County special for us to visit," said Jeff Maxted, of the Dane County Environmental Council. “And we hope that people think of this as an opportunity to give back and do a little bit for these spaces that we like to visit."

The event marked the first "Dirty for Dane," with a total of seven different projects throughout the county.
