MADISON, Wis. -

A trail of motor fluid left behind from a crash on Madison’s south side led police to the home of a drunken driver Thursday night, according to a news release.

Police said a witness saw Gregory Peterson, 40, of Madison, speeding on the Beltline before exiting the highway near Todd Drive, crashing into a traffic sign and driving away. The witness called police while following Peterson’s car, the release said.

The witness showed police the trail of motor fluid, which led them to Peterson’s Ardsley Circle apartment and his damaged vehicle, which had two flat tires, police said.

Peterson was arrested for his third offense operating while intoxicated, hit-and-run, unreasonable and imprudent speed and resisting/obstructing.
