It’s not even October, but many companies are thinking ahead to the winter and the upcoming holidays.

Kohl's announced it will hire 69,000 employees this holiday season in stores and distribution centers.

Many retailers in Madison are hiring too.

Mary and Nick Atkin, the owners of Pier South at Hilldale Mall, are already prepping for the holiday season. Not with decorations, or with putting together a festive playlist, but by training more workers.

“We actively hired three people in the last couple of weeks,” Nick Atkin said.

The new retail store is banking on a pretty generous holiday and wants to be ready for busy shopping days and extended winter hours.

“We're not sure how the holidays are going to treat us here at Hilldale, but I think we are expecting more foot traffic coming here through the holidays,” Atkin said.

Companies small and big need more helpers.

“The hiring just continues to go now until December,” said Tiffany Schultz, the marketing director at East Towne and West Towne malls. "JCPenney, Boston Store, Sears are looking for upwards of 30 to 40 employees.”

You don't have to look hard to find a "now hiring" sign at West Towne Mall. It has 200 positions available, many of which are seasonal.

“The more employees you have to take care of the customers the better customer service experience the shopper is going to have at your store,” Schultz said.
