A University of Minnesota student was knocked unconscious after stepping between two people arguing over a sports-related topic, according to Madison police.

The 21-year-old was in Madison Saturday for the Minnesota-Wisconsin football game.

The victim said he was at a bar in the 500 block of Lake Street at 12:55 when he was hit by a stray punch or elbow, causing him to fall backward and hit his head. 

He was transported to a hospital for treatment of a large lump.
