BELOIT, Wis. -

Beloit residents will learn more about two sex offenders moving into their community at a meeting Wednesday night.

Sex offenders Clayton J. Smith, 52, and Mark R. Taber Sr., 58, will share a house at 2219 Euclid Ave.

Randy Mears, a father of two, said he's uneasy about the men moving into the neighborhood.

"We have a lot of kids in the neighborhood, and they don't need to be in with kids," Mears said.

Smith was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in 1992. He was civilly committed in March 1997 and released on Dec. 30, 2010.

Taber was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child in 1991, was committed to civil supervision in June 2000, and was granted release in January.

"We have a swing set in our front yard. Half the people over here have swing sets in their front yards -- and you're going to have child molesters moving in," Mears said.

Some residents said they're concerned about their southwest side neighborhood because the state continues to place sex offenders there.

"Somebody should have told us, because the people next door, that house has been up for sale since she passed away, and nobody is going to want to buy that house, especially if they've got children," said Minna, a Beloit resident.

Capt. Vince Sciame of the Beloit Police Department said both men are not allowed to have contact with minors. They are also not allowed to go into taverns. To help officials keep tabs on them, Smith and Taber will be wearing GPS monitoring devices.

"We'll be in the area and we'll be making our area officers aware that these folks will be in this residence," Sciame said.

Mears said he wants the men to find another home.

"Get them out, find some other place for them. Find a little spot out in the country and have somebody watch them. They did the crimes, we didn't," Mears said.

The men are expected to move to Beloit later this month.

The Beloit Police Department will formally notify the neighbors at a community meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at City of Beloit Forum, 100 State St.
