A report of nearby shots fired prompted a Madison elementary school to lock down.
Leopold Elementary School on Madison's south side was locked down Wednesday afternoon.
Madison police say 911 callers said they heard shots around 1:30 p.m. near an intersection about a half-block from the school grounds. No shots were fired at the school or on school grounds.
There were no reports of injuries.
Some information provided indicated the incident could have happened near the intersection of Turbot Drive and Pike Drive, police said.
Police said the 2900 block of Traceway Drive is also being checked for possible evidence.
Police alerted school staff about the investigation, and the school was locked down and all students kept indoors.
On its website, the school said classes were not disrupted and students were released on schedule when police said it was safe.
