MADISON, Wis. -

The Dane County Board approved a $587 million budget Monday that focuses on several key issues, including the heroin epidemic and the environment, county executive Joe Parisi said.

But Parisi said the budget does not include repairs to the county jail.

Instead, “We need to make sure we do everything possible to ensure that people who don’t need to be in jail aren’t going to jail,” Parisi said. “We need to focus on getting people mental-health services.”

Parisi said addressing the root problem of crime can make a bigger difference.

The county is also working on a plan to renovate the Alliant Energy center.

Property taxes will go up about $22 on the average home.
