MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. -

Mount Pleasant police said an officer has shot and killed a pit bull that charged at him.

Police received a report Sunday morning that a man was trapped on top of a vehicle. The man told police he couldn't get down because a pit bull was trying to attack him.

The responding officer saw the dog in the yard about 15 feet from the man. The officer drove between the dog and the vehicle, allowing the man to escape.

A Journal Times of Racine report said the officer contacted the residence where the dog apparently lived but no one answered the phone or front door.

When the officer exited his squad, the dog allegedly chased him across the street. Police said the officer was forced to shoot in self-defense.
