LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Professors and campus police says the student who took a shotgun into a classroom at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is someone familiar to them because of his erratic behavior.

The male student was arrested Thursday outside Cowley Hall where he had taken an unloaded, cased shotgun into a class. Professors alerted campus police last month when the student began acting strangely. Chancellor Joe Gow says the student began to see himself as a law enforcement figure.

The La Crosse Tribune reported the part-time student went to the university police office to complain that the chancellor and others had contacted his family about his unusual behavior. He was arrested in a parking lot as university staff were preparing a text and email alert.

The student could face criminal charges.
