MADISON, Wis. -

Three Madison 13-year-olds were arrested on a Metro bus after police said the trio stole candy and condoms from a Walgreens store and threatened an employee with knives.

Police were called to the Walgreens at 606 S. Whitney Way at 8:52 p.m. Friday for a report of a robbery.

The store manager told police he spotted the teenagers stealing candy and condoms and offered to keep them from getting in trouble if they would put the items back.

The teens set off the alarm as they left the store and the manager followed them into the parking lot, where he gave them a chance to return the items, according to police.

The manager said he called police after at least two, but maybe all three teens brandished knives.

Police arrived and the suspects were arrested on a bus at the West Transfer Point nearby.

Officers said they found three steak knives on the teens, including a 7-inch, 5 1/2 –inch and 4 ½-inch blade.

One teen told police he carries the knife for protection and another said he had been cutting food and forgot he had the blade in his pocket, according to officers.

Police said candy was found on the bus where the teens had been seated.

The three were taken to the Juvenile Reception Center on suspicion of armed robbery, retail theft, carrying a concealed weapon and intimidation of a victim. Two are suspected of disorderly conduct while armed and one is suspected of disorderly conduct.
