Police ID 85-year-old man killed by SWAT
Shooting under investigation by local sheriff's department
The police chief in the small northern Wisconsin town of Hurley has released the name of an 85-year-old man fatally shot by a SWAT team in his apartment.
Killed in the Friday morning incident was Leo J. Driscoll of Hurley. Police Chief Dan Erspamer said Saturday that the shooting is under investigation by the sheriff's department in nearby Vilas County and that he can't release details the circumstances of the shooting. He said Driscoll had no record with local police.
Erspamer said Driscoll threatened his apartment manager with a handgun, and then retreated to his apartment. He said Driscoll's girlfriend warned police he had multiple firearms.
Erspamer said two of his officers and several others on the multi-jurisdictional SWAT team are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
