Madison firefighters say three people are lucky they escaped injury in a Friday morning fire. No working smoke detectors were in the home, according to fire officials.
Crews were called to the 2300 block of Teal Drive at 2:26 a.m. Friday, where they found a fire in the basement. Smoke was coming from the home's eaves and basement windows when firefighters arrived.
The homeowner smelled smoke and got himself and two other adults out of the home safely.
"If nobody had woken up when they did, we may have had some serious injuries or fatalities tonight," said Madison Fire Department spokesman Eric Dahl.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire, but the home did sustain smoke damage. Total damage is estimated at $100,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
