New Glarus police search for stolen guns
12 guns stolen in home burglary
Authorities in Green County have made arrests in a burglary where thieves stole a dozen guns and a substantial amount of cash.
The suspects are in custody, but New Glarus police said they haven't found all the stolen property.
Police said they are still searching for 12 firearms stolen from a house in New Glarus.
Last September, investigators said, Justin Wenger, of Monroe, William Wilke, of Stoughton, and Ryan Coyle, of New Glarus, targeted the home in New Glarus.
New Glarus police are reaching out to area law enforcement agencies in hopes of finding the missing weapons.
"We're working with the ATF, and (the Department of Criminal Investigation) on it. We have crime alerts on the guns, and we're working with other agencies if they come across the guns," said Sgt. Jeff Sturdevant, of the New Glarus Police Department.
The firearms were kept in a safe; according to the criminal complaint, the suspects opened the victims' garage and drove off with the safe and a substantial amount of cash.
"One of the suspects had knowledge of what was in the safe," Sturdevant said.
"(They stole) six semi-automatic pistols and four semi-automatic assault-style rifles," said New Glarus Police Chief Burt Boldebuck.
The police chief said stolen guns typically find their way to the black market and into the hands of people who can't legally purchase weapons.
"With the type of weapons that were taken and the magazine sizes and everything that was taken in the burglary, we do want to locate them and get them off the street before somebody gets hurt or injured or killed by them," Boldebuck said.
Anyone with information on the missing firearms is urged to call the New Glarus Police Department at 608-527-2145 or Green County Crime Stoppers at 800-I-C-CRIME (1-800-422-7463).
