Milwaukee museum hosts French posters exhibit
Exhibit runs through Sept. 9
A Milwaukee Art Museum is hosting an exhibit of 19th century French posters.
The more than 100 posters were designed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules ChDeret, Pierre Bonnard, Alphonse Mucha and others.
Exhibition curator Mary Weaver Chapin said the posters covered billboards, scaffolding, Morris columns, kiosks and shop windows throughout Paris in the late 1800s. A Morris column is an outdoor column on which advertisements or other messages are posted.
She said the works celebrated the dawn of new entertainment, new products and new technology.
"Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His Contemporaries" starts Friday and runs through Sept. 9.
The exhibition includes rare, preparatory studies that show how artists developed their designs.
