MADISON, Wis. -

A 34-year-old Madison man was robbed of his cash after visiting an ATM on the city's east side Tuesday night, according to police.

The victim told police he withdrew cash from an ATM before driving to a business in the 3500 block of East Washington Avenue before 8 p.m. He said as soon as he got out of his van, he was approached by a man asking for a cigarette.

The victim said he told the man he doesn't smoke and the man demanded money, and reached into the man's pocket containing the cash he got from the ATM. The robber took the money and fled, according to police.

The robber didn't check any of the victim's other pockets, according to the victim. He also thought the robber might have had a knife.

The robber is described as white, in his early 30s, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a thin build, black hair and a short beard. He was wearing a dirty green jacket.
