FRIENDSHIP, Wis. -

A 28-year-old Adams man who authorities say fatally shot his girlfriend when she startled him awake has pleaded not guilty to a reckless homicide charge.

Coleman Dybul is charged in the shooting death of 27-year-old Toni Voss.

The Wausau Daily Herald reported an Adams County investigator described in court Monday what happened during the early morning hours of March 2, when Voss got up to get her son a glass of milk.

According to the complaint, a noise woke Dybul, and he saw the silhouette of a person against a window. Dybul mistook the figure for someone attacking Voss and shot at it with a loaded shotgun, fatally striking Voss in the chest.

Dybul told authorities he was "hit" in Afghanistan and keeps a weapon near him while he sleeps.
