Man found dead in road
Authorities look for cause of injuries
Madison police are investigating the death of a man found lying in the road Sunday evening.
Police said a man with massive head and neck injuries was found on 2323 Portage Road at around 7:30 p.m. He was taken to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
"There were multiple calls about the scenario and there were individuals attempting to assist the victim when police arrived as well," said Howard Payne, public information officer at the Madison Police Department.
The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Aryle J. Dahlke, 66, of Madison.
A forensic autopsy was completed Monday at the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office. Preliminary results of that autopsy indicate that Dahlke's death was the result of blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Additional testing is under way.
Police are investigating how the man suffered his injuries.
"The injuries were consistent with both neck and head trauma that may have had some connection with a vehicle," Payne said.
Investigators can't say for sure that the man was involved in a hit-and-run, and they are still looking for clues from those who may have seen what happened.
"If they know anything else that may have contributed to this person being in this position, those are the types of details we need to be able to investigate this further. At this point, we're still asking a lot of questions as well," Payne said.
The alderman for that east side area said he didn't believe the man was from the neighborhood.
