Man accused in 2010 gang killing arrested in Mexico
19-year-old killed in shooting
A man accused of killing a 19-year-old in a gang-related shooting on Madison's east side in 2010 has been arrested in Mexico.
The U.S. Marshals Service and Madison Police Department said Saturday that Arain Gutierrez, also known as Ivan Mateo-Lozenzo, was arrested by Mexican authorities Friday in Cancun.
Gutierrez is charged in the April 28, 2010, shooting death of Antonio Perez in the parking lot at Webcrafters on Fordem Avenue in Madison.
Prosecutors said a group of five had gone out looking for rival gang members when they saw Perez taking a break outside his workplace.
The criminal complaint said the group confronted Perez about his gang affiliation, then shot him after learning he was a member of the Clanton 14, or C14 gang.
Prosecutors said they believe Gutierrez was the gunman in the fatal shooting.
Investigation after the shooting resulted in the immediate arrest of three suspects.
Gutierrez and another suspect, Billy Wenner-Say, were able elude arrest and flee the Madison area, police said.
U.S. marshals and Madison police believed both fled to their home countries: Gutierrez to Mexico and Wenner-Say to Guatemala.
Within the last six months, investigation showed Gutierrez in Cancun, Mexico. During that time, the Dane County District Attorney's Office provided the necessary legal support for Gutierrez international arrest warrant, according to a joint news release from the U.S. Marshals Service and Madison Police Department.
"This type of senseless gang violence will not be tolerated in the city of Madison, and for more than 2 1/2 years the Madison Police Department has been working diligently and cooperatively with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Dane County District Attorney, to make sure this fugitive did not escape justice. This case demonstrates, again, the strong relationship that exists between the MPD and U.S. marshals," the Madison Police Department said in a statement.
Gutierrez will be transported to Mexico City, where he will await extradition, according to the release.
