A 22-year-old Madison woman was robbed and sexually assaulted in a downtown Madison park early Sunday morning, Madison police said.
Police said the woman was walking in the 700 block of West Washington Avenue when a gunman grabbed her and pulled her into Brittingham Park.
Police said the woman was threatened, battered, choked and sexually assaulted. Her credit card was also taken, according to police.
Madison police said stranger sexual assaults are rare, but even on well-traveled streets like West Washington Avenue, police are urging residents to stay vigilant and stay in groups, especially at night.
Investigators are looking for any piece of information leading to an arrest.
"People may have just a tad bit of information that they don't think is important, but in this case, we really have a very dangerous criminal, an armed criminal, who was in the downtown area and it's very important we get this person off the streets," said Joel DeSpain, Madison Police Department spokesman.
Police said the assailant was described as a black man, 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 160 to 180 pounds with a medium to heavy build and a dark complexion, wide-set jaw and short "buzzed" hair style.
Detectives are working with the victim to get more information about the attacker in an effort provide a sketch for the public.
