Edgewood College Dean of Education Jane Belmore has been announced by the Madison Metropolitan School District as the district's new interim school superintendent.
Belmore will leave her current job as dean when she takes over the Madison school district.
Present superintendent Dan Nerad has announced plans to take a new job in Birmingham, Mich., later this year.
"Jane is the right person to lead our district through an important time," Board President James Howard said. "Not only is she a respected leader in the field of education, but she also brings expertise in our district and our community."
The school board plans to appoint Belmore for the 2012-2013 school year. The board wants to have a permanent replacement in place to start on July 1, 2013.
Belmore is a former teacher, principal and assistant superinterdent with the Madison school district. Belmore received a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 2000.
"I am honored by the Board of Education's appointment and grateful to Edgewood College President Dan Carey and my colleagues at the college for their gracious support of my decision to accept this appointment," Belmore said. "I see my role as interim superintendent as one of setting priorities and acting on the present initiatives, while laying the foundation for a successful transition to the leadership of a new superintendent.
"In my first weeks, I will focus on connecting with principals, department heads and front line staff, as well as community leaders, including our higher education partners and individual school board members," said Belmore. "I look forward to visiting summer sites, meeting teachers and families and getting to work together."
Belmore is expected to start July 16.
