MADISON, Wis. -

Not even freezing temperatures can scare away some Wisconsin residents from swimming in winter.

Diversions Scuba instructors and their students battled the cold on Lake Mendota Sunday to go ice diving.

Five students geared up and entered the frigid water for half an hour each.

Instructor Andrew Thompson said ice diving is an opportunity that only Wisconsin offers.

“You can’t do this anywhere else,” Thompson said. “Diving in Wisconsin can go anywhere from shipwreck diving, which is awesome, to really bad visibility in the summer, and this is just another aspect of that. It’s just another world to visit.”

Diversions Scuba also offers summer classes on diving techniques for those less interested in swimming during the winter.
