MADISON, Wis. -

A 23-year-old downtown bicyclist collided with a Madison Police Department mounted patrol unit on State Street Saturday night after he did not give the horse “adequate horse space,” police said.

The 23-year-old tried to pass Ahab in the 200 block of State Street just before 11 p.m., according to a release.

The bicyclist was riding “hands free” when he collided with Ahab’s left hip, police said.

The bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet but did not have a bike light, fell to the ground and was not injured, according to the release.

“Ahab seemed no worse for the impact following what is believed to be State Street’s first bicycle versus horse accident,” the release said.
