Jury convicts Wis. John Doe defendant
Sentencing set for Dec. 7
A Milwaukee County jury has convicted one of Gov. Scott Walker's former associates of stealing money donated to help veterans and their families.
Jurors Friday convicted 62-year-old Kevin Kavanaugh of Cudahy of stealing more than $51,000.
Prosecutors alleged that Kavanaugh had skimmed the money from bank deposits and phony withdrawals from accounts for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a veterans service organization.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Kavanaugh said nothing following the verdict. Sentencing is set for Dec. 7.
The defense argued Kavanaugh was simply a terrible bookkeeper.
Walker appointed Kavanaugh to the county Veterans Service Commission when Walker was Milwaukee County executive.
Kavanaugh was charged as part of a secret investigation Milwaukee prosecutors launched into Walker's office. The governor has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
