Thousands of Ironman Wisconsin athletes ran swam and biked more than 140 miles Sunday.
While that is incredibly impressive, they got some major support from the volunteers. Just like the athletes, volunteers were up early on Sunday morning. They were stationed all around the course, handing out water, snacks and some encouragement.
“Our goal is to do whatever they need us to do, if it's just a smile or even just a ‘you can do it,’ Kris Halverson, a Monona fire fighter and volunteer, said. “We have water, Gatorade, we have a lot of cowbells out here and our goal is just to inspire and keep them on their way.”
Future ironman athletes, emergency service members and the Monona Grove High School football team are just a few of the groups that volunteered.
