MADISON, Wis. -

Neighbors in a north side neighborhood said they were concerned for their safety when they heard gunfire Wednesday night outside their homes.

Madison police were called at 9:18 p.m. to the 1800 block of Windom Way on a report of shots fired. Witnesses told police there were cars stopped in the street with people milling about before the gunfire started. They told police the people don’t live in the neighborhood, and that there has been an ongoing concern about possible drug trafficking.

Citizens and officers found five shell casings on the street.

One resident, a 55-year-old man, told officers, "I hit the deck because I thought they were shooting my house.” Another resident, living on the block, said his dog went "ballistic."
