Friends: Shooting victim was neighbor who entered wrong house
Officer placed on leave
The friends of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting Friday tell WISC the man described as a burglary suspect was a neighbor who had entered the wrong home.
Officers were called to a home in the 500 block of South Baldwin Street at 2:46 a.m. after a woman called 911 to report hearing someone in her house. Police said the woman’s husband investigated the sounds.
Police said the first officer on the scene saw two men struggling outside the home and one of the men engaged the officer in the physical confrontation.
The officer repeatedly ordered the man to get down and the man was shot by the officer, according to police.
The victim’s friends told WISC the man had recently moved to the neighborhood and mistakenly walked into the wrong home. They said both men were outside the home when police arrived.
Police confirm the man killed in the shooting lived in the neighborhood.
Investigators won’t say if the man was armed.
The family has confirmed the victim's identity but has asked that his name be withheld pending notification of family members.
The officer involved in the shooting is a 15-year department veteran and has been placed on administrative leave, according to police.
