Police say subjects tried to pass counterfeit check at bank
Fitchburg police arrested two people who fled from officers after attempting to pass a counterfeit check at a bank, police said.
Fitchburg police responded to Associated Bank, 3002 Fish Hatchery Road, shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday on a report of people trying to pass a counterfeit check at the drive-up lane at the bank.
When the first officer arrived, one man fled on foot and other responding officers saw the man fleeing and chased him on foot. The man was taken into custody by officers several blocks away, according to a Fitchburg Police Department news release.
The vehicle also fled the scene, and the initial officer pursued the vehicle.
Police said the vehicle went a short distance and the driver fled. A third person in the vehicle was taken into custody when the vehicle stopped.
Officers searched the suspect vehicle and located a handgun, police said. At this point, the driver was still at large and it was unknown if he was also armed.
Leopold School was placed in a lockdown, police said.
During the investigation, the driver called one of the subjects. Police requested he return to the scene, and he complied, according to the news release.
When the driver was taken into custody, the school was released from lockdown status.
Police said all three people involved in the incident were taken into custody.
Police said Paul D. Richardson, 24, of Madison, was arrested on charges of forgery, obstructing an officer, being a felon in possession of a handgun and on a probation violation.
Police said Jonathon L. Thompson, 24, with no fixed address, was arrested on charges of eluding an officer, obstructing an officer, being a felon in possession of a handgun and on a probation violation.
The third person in the vehicle was released without any charges, police said.
