Experts: Plants need extra water this week
Plant owners should step up watering
Despite the forecast for some rain this weekend, gardening experts warn plant owners to increase their watering schedules.
Workers at Johannsen's Greenhouses said plants need a steady two inches of rain. But without the precipitation, plant owners should step up their own watering.
"Lawns need at least an inch of water a week to do any good, so your most important tool at this time of the year is a rain gauge. Measure your sprinklers and actually drop an inch of water into your lawn to keep it going," said Lynn Johanssen.
Plants in the ground can be watered every other day. Flowering plants in hanging baskets or planters need a good soaking every day.
"Hanging baskets sometimes need to be watered twice a day, on hot windy days. We have no rain. And there's no humidity and the wind can really elevate the problem even more," said Johanssen.
