Wisconsin transportation officials are warning motorists to watch out for deer this month.

Officials with the Department of Transportation said deer activity increases in June as does look for places to give birth and young deer separate from their mothers.

They said June ranked as the worst or second-worst for motorist injuries from deer crashes in four of the last five years.

They said drivers should be especially watchful in the early morning and evening hours, when deer are the most active. If drivers spot a deer along the side of the road, they should slow down and honk their horns in hopes of scaring the deer away.

If drivers hit a deer, they should move their vehicles off the road, stay in them and call police.
