MADISON, Wis. -

The theft of an idling car on Madison's north side last week prompted a seasonal warning from police.

Madison police said a 2000 Chevrolet Impala was stolen from a driveway Wednesday in the 3700 block of School Road at 5:30 p.m.

Four days later, on Sunday, police recovered the Impala. It was found parked in the 5800 block of Balsam Road, according to a report.

Madison police spokesman said as the weather gets colder, thefts of unlocked vehicles increase.

"The problem is many leave autos, vans, trucks and SUVs running and unlocked, a perfect combination for opportunistic criminals, many of whom are not interested in keeping your wheels for the long haul," DeSpain said. "(Theives) often just seek a way to get from point A to point B, which sometimes is across town."

Police said anyone who leaves their vehicle unsupervised while it's warming should be sure it's locked to thwart thieves.
