LANCASTER, Wis. - Someone in a parked truck fired at a woman driving on Highway 61 Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The incident happened between Dickeyville, Wis., and Potosi, Wis.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Department said a Ford F150 pick-up truck with a topper was parked on the west side of the road facing south when the woman, 40, was passing headed north.
As the woman’s 2008 Ford Escape neared the location of the suspect truck, a rifle barrel from the suspect’s vehicle fired. Deputies later recovered a bullet from the frame of the victim’s SUV; the bullet hit the driver’s side door just above the window.
The woman's four children were also in the Escape when the bullet hit the vehicle, the sheriff said.
No injuries were reported.
Deputies could not locate the pickup, which was described as a forest green 1980s-1990s-style Ford F150 extended-cab pick-up truck with possibly a sliver stripe or two-tone-painted, silver on green. The sheriff said the driver was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.
The sheriff’s department asked anyone with information on the incident to contact the Grant County sheriff or crime stoppers at 800-789-6600.
Sheriff Nate Dreckman and Deputy Mark Schwarz said they don’t believe the woman driving was the shooter’s intended target.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Department also said that though there have recently been changes to regulations on carrying and transporting firearms, it is still illegal to fire a gun from inside a vehicle and within 50 feet of a roadway’s center line.
The case remains under investigation.
The woman’s children are aged 18, 13, 10 and 6.
