A small community said a big goodbye to a cherished leader over the weekend.
The village of Brooklyn laid to rest its fire chief of 38 years.
Phil Mortensen worked at that fire department for the last 42 years, leading it for most of that time.
Mortensen died suddenly last weekend at the age of 67.
Saturday, during his funeral procession, crowds lined the streets.
Firefighters walked alongside and friends took a moment to say goodbye.
"The village of Brooklyn is going to miss Chief Mortensen," said nearby resident Ruth Klahn. "He's been a longtime institution in the village and he's just been a great friend."
Mortensen died of a heart attack at his business, Mortensen Auto.
It's considered a "line of duty" death, since he had responded to a call within his last 24 hours alive.
