BP: $12 million paid thus far in multistate bad-gasoline recall
Wis. one of 4 states with consumers claiming damages
Company officials said BP has paid Wisconsin claimants and consumers in three other states in connection with a gas recall, totaling more than $12 million in payments to date.
BP spokesman Scott Dean told The Times of Munster 14,000 claims have been process thus far in the multistate recall of incorrectly formulated gasoline that damaged some vehicles' mechanical components.
He said BP is still processing legitimate claims for which it's received documentation. But Dean said several thousand people who've filed claims haven't produced the needed documents or haven't responded to inquiries from the company.
He said some suspected cases of fraudulent claims have been passed on to law enforcement.
BP recalled about 4.7 million gallons of gasoline in August distributed Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. The fuel caused problems that included hard starting, stalling and damage to critical vehicle components.
