MADISON, Wis. -

Madison police said an alert bar patron helped an officer locate a theft suspect.

The bar patron snapped a couple of photos of a theft suspect on his cellphone at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after a woman's $500 iPhone and credit card were taken from a State Street Brats bench, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said the victim, a 23-year-old Madison woman, was dancing and had left her coat and purse unattended.

The theft suspect left the bar, with the witness not far behind, police said.

The citizen flagged down a police officer and showed the officer the photos. About the same time, he spotted the theft suspect not far from where he had contacted the officer, police said.

The officer arrested the suspect, Brian M. Bromberek, 29, of Milwaukee, on tentative charges of theft and possession of schedule I and II narcotics, according to the incident report.

Police said the victim's cellphone and credit card were recovered.
