Adams man arrested in shooting of girlfriend
Suspect told officers that girlfriend startled him
Adams County authorities are holding a 28-year-old suspect in the shooting death of his girlfriend.
The Adams County Sheriff's Department said it initially responded to a report of a shooting at 117 N. Elm St. in the City of Adams early Saturday morning.
Officials said Coleman Dybul, 28, of Adams, told dispatchers that at about 1:48 a.m. he was asleep in bed when his girlfriend startled him and he shot her with a shotgun he kept near the bed.
Deputies from the sheriff’s department responded to the home along with Adams police and Curtis Ambulance.
Sheriff Sam Wollin said the victim, Toni Voss, 27, of Adams, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Adams County Medical Examiner.
Coleman Dybul is being held on suspicion of first-degree reckless homicide.
A young child who was in the house at the time was unharmed and was placed with a relative.
Some in the closely-knit community said Dybul had a hard time assimilating back into everyday life after coming back from overseas combat.
"If they would have helped him when he came back, probably never would have happened," said Jami Komatz.
While the weekend shooting is the talk of the town, Komatz says the community needs less gossip and more facts.
The sheriff’s department is investigating with the assistance of the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations and the state patrol.
The report did not indicate if the Voss also lived in the home. The identity of the child was not revealed in the sheriff’s report.
