CAZENOVIA, Wis. -- Crisis counselors who have been working with staff, students and community members from Weston schools say the district is on the path toward healing.Monday was the second day of open counseling for the community. While counselors continued to meet with students and staff, the schools' janitors prepped the gymnasium bleachers; not for a home basketball game, but rather for the funeral of the man many are calling a hero."For some of these kids and parents, they may not be able to deal with this for months, that's the way the grieving process is," said CESA 5 counselor John Stevens.Stevens was overseeing 33 counselors who were on hand, coming from as far away as Stevens Point. He said from what he has learned in recent days, the community is ready to begin moving forward."I saw kids playing buckets," said Stevens. "I saw teachers and kids interacting in a school-like environment. I think they're ready to go and moving on."Weston School District superintendent Terry Milfred said after the funerals in the coming two days, that's exactly what his district will do – move forward. The home football game is on for Friday and more normal things are planned for the future."Homecoming is a real possibility because we have another home game," said Milfred.Classes will resume on Thursday at a relaxed pace to give kids a chance to catch up.It will also end 45 minutes early for teachers to debrief."We want to know how did it go that day," said Milfred. "What kind of questions did you get from kids? Did you help them?"There will be between 10 and 15 counselors on hand on Thursday to help students' transition back to school. The district is also filling out an application for a $50,000 grant from the federal government to help schools in crisis situations. The school is also seeking volunteers to help with things like lawn mowing.
