Klang's Wife: 'That's Something John Would Do'

Residents Request Memorial Cross For Klang

Updated: 9:08 am CDT October 2, 2006

The wife of slain Weston High School principal John Klang spoke with WISC-TV over the weekend.

Klang's wife said that when she heard what had happened at the school on Friday her first thought was, "That's exactly something John would do."

Some Weston parents have requested a memorial be erected for the longtime principal who died on Friday in the school shooting. Some community members have asked an Illinois man to place a cross at Weston High School on Klang's behalf, WISC-TV reported.

Crosses for Losses is a ministry run by Greg Zanis out of Chicago.

Zanis has built and placed more than 7,000 crosses across the country as memorials to those who died violently or suddenly. The crosses at Columbine were Zanis', as were crosses placed in front of a Brookfield, Wis., church after a violent shooting there last year.

The cross would memorialize Klang who was a lifetime Cazenovia resident and Weston High School graduate. Friends and community members said that he is irreplaceable, WISC-TV reported.

"Anybody could go to him at any time," said Weston teacher Janis Unbehaun. "He was a giver, very much of a giver, just a very nice person which you don't often encounter in principals."

Resident Barb Wacholtz's two children are high school students at Weston.

"When you send your kids to school, you want them to be safe," said Wacholtz. "You don't want to have to worry about them. You want to know that the people in charge will do anything to protect them, and that's exactly what happened (on Friday). They did everything, they protected our kids."
